HOT-AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL

A preschool program for children with speech and language difficulties.

This is Michigan's first hospital-based preschool program for children with speech and language difficulties. The program is designed to meet the needs of children who are primarily speech and language impaired between the ages of three and five and a half years. The classroom is team taught by a Speech Pathologist and a certified teacher with an Early Childhood Education background and Special Education experience. We utilize a "language-based" approach as we focus on cognitive skills, comprehension, verbal expression, academic readiness, fine and gross motor skill development, social interactive skills, art and music. We emphasize all instruction at each child's individual level of learning. In addition to the speech and language emphasis and individualized approach, we offer the opportunity for each child to receive his/her individual treatment session during the preschool day.

  Daily Activities Include:

Free Play - This is a time that allows for free exploration of all toys and games in preschool.

Art - Art is a time to encourage individual expression and creativity. It allows children to enhance their fine motor skills. Projects are planned around the theme of the week creating opportunities to build language skills.

Snack - A time to encourage interaction while children prepare their own snack.

Sensory Based Motor Time - Many of the children enrolled in our preschool experience difficulty with motor development along with their speech and language difficulties. Special daily activities are planned to increase their control over the full range of their body's movements. Activities include: climbing, tumbling, jumping, throwing and catching.

Language Time - This is a very important part of our day. We work on each child's ability to understand what he hears, remember details, to ask and answer questions.

Circle Time - Circle time is when we come together as a group to discuss the theme of the day or to review from past days. This is a time when basic concepts such as colors, shapes, numbers, letters, the calendar and the weather are taught.

Story Time - Story time is an excellent opportunity to enhance expressive language and listening skills.
